Today, Christian Bale has indeed turned villain again for Marvel in Thor: Love and Thunder. An imposing antagonist. The plot follows the comic book storyline and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) is back. Taika Waititi’s humorous wit is obvious. Yet, Love and Thunder, although a strong standalone film, doesn’t quite meet the standards of the previous Thor sequel, Thor: Ragnarok (2017).

Thor has been a key part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over a decade, but his standalone films failed to hit the mark completely or missed the target. Thor: The Dark World (2013) was an awful entry. Thor: The Origins Story (2011) was a decent beginning. In the end, everyone’s list of top five MCU films should contain Thor: Ragnarok (2017) for sure. The return of the Hemsworth – Waititi collaboration meant that expectations were at an all-time high ahead of the movie’s release.
When Gorr (Bale) (Bale), who wants to end the existence of gods following his disappointment by one, chooses to attacking New Asgard to steal the Stormbreaker, Thor has to stop the god-killer by joining forces with Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Waititi) and his former girlfriend Jane Foster, who has been transformed into Mighty Thor. The story is straightforward, unlike recent Marvel movies, and the performances are excellent in the film. Hemsworth is the main character, who is suffering from middle-age crisis. But Bale as well as Portman are exceptional. As evidence of Bale’s abilities, the pre-title credit scene is. Gorr could have been the new Thanos in the MCU. Bale adds a sense of eerieness to the role, but there’s nothing else to it.
Portman is Mjolnir’s ex-girlfriend who has cancer. In light of the fact that Marvel is keen on handing over the mantles of Hawkeye and, in the next few months, Hulk, to women characters, I expected that the Mighty Thor to be a comparable tick on the list of representation. However, the film builds the story of the astrophysicist, who gets to demonstrate her biceps in several scenes.
Marvel also performs its own acting in all of the appearances. In addition to the entire Guardians of the Galaxy team We also have Matt Damon, Sam Neill, and Luke Hemsworth reprising their roles from Thor: Ragnarok as Loki, Odin, and Thor respectively. Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone are also being portrayed as Hela and the director for the Asgardian play. Waititi who, has since Ragnarok has directed Jojo, the Oscar-winning Rabbit, is back in his favourite genre once again. There are hilarious ideas like two noisy goats Korg’s narration of Thor’s story, Thor breaking his legs, Valkyrie posing as the ambassador of Old Spice…
The premise is that Thor seeks his Mjolnir but is afraid of Stormbreaker’s jealousy. However, these gags, however effective, fall at the expense of genuine emotional intensity and help expose the thin plot. Thor: Love and Thunder deals with a variety of love–ranging from a father-daughter connection to the complex relationship between lovers who have fallen out… It’s a parallel between Gorr losing his faith in the god he worships, Rapu, and Thor getting disillusioned by Zeus (played by Russell Crowe). The possibilities are endless but…
There are numerous references to movies like Harry Potter and Interstellar, in addition to easter eggs. The camera shows the god of death, Falligar, taken straight from comics. We see Hemsworth wearing the original Thor costume that comic book lovers will recognise. In a battle with Zeus, Thor reveals his true colours. We also see a tattoo reading ‘RIP Loki The costume of the trickster etched on the back of our Viking. The wicked Necrosword is revealed and it’s fascinating to watch how the weapons are revealed as being able to control people, given the manner in which Stormbreaker and Mjolnir seem to have their own minds.
We’ve seen this in the ten rings from Shang Chi, the magical Bangle from Ms Marvel, and the Ebony Blade in the post-credits scene from Eternals. The phrase “Gods won’t empower you but they will use you” from Marvel’s latest show, Moonknight, feels very familiar. The loss of Valkyrie in war to her greatest friend , as well as Korg falling for another Kronan man is included.
The first portion reminds us of all the colour we enjoyed in Ragnarok however, much of the second half is set in a dark realm , in which everything is all black and white. It is true that the action scenes that are monochrome are quite satisfying.
Hemsworth continues to play Thor Hemsworth will continue to play Thor, which is a great relief for MCU fans who’ve witnessed the original Avengers die or hang their heads.
